Drug use disorder is not discriminatory – and neither should the availability of treatment. The opioid epidemic in America has devastating overdose and death statistics, but we rarely look beyond them. One in three Americans develop an opioid use disorder after receiving a legal opioid prescription for pain, even though many Americans think the opioid crisis started at the border. The opioid epidemic in America has devastating overdose and death statistics, but we rarely look beyond them. In part, the numbers are incorrect because opioid use disorder (OUD) is not racial or ethnic. OUD impacts people of all income levels and geographies, with those identifying as two or more races or Native Americans most affected. Providing access to medications for OUD (MOUD), including buprenorphine-a lifesaving drug for those suffering from OUD-for the diverse groups affected by the opioid crisis requires equally diverse strategies.

During the pandemic, telehealth prescribing requirements were loosened, giving patients in dire need access to care. The success of telehealth treatment extends into communities. Widening access to telehealth treatment is essential, but it can only be relied on partially. Addressing OUD in the country can be accomplished differently by focusing on specific touchpoints beyond telehealth. Our collective efforts can improve the lives of the diverse individuals affected by OUD.

Our goal at ICON Medicine Family Practice is to ensure that treatment access is extended for the long term, but addressing the opioid epidemic will require collective efforts and support. As we expand our care offerings, we will have a more significant impact on the large number of people in our country who struggle with OUD. Visit https://www. iconmedicine.com for more information.
